Francis of Assisi
Francis of Assisi (c.1181–1226) was one of the most beloved and influential Christians of the Middle Ages. Known for his humility, joy, and compassion, Francis left behind a life of wealth and privilege to follow Christ in radical simplicity. His example inspired a movement that renewed Christian devotion and service throughout Europe.
Born into a prosperous merchant family in Assisi, Italy, Francis spent his youth pursuing pleasure, popularity, and dreams of military glory. But after experiencing illness, disappointment, and a growing spiritual restlessness, he began to question the direction of his life. His turning point came when he encountered the words of Jesus calling His followers to leave everything and follow Him. Francis took those words literally.
In a dramatic public scene, Francis renounced his family’s wealth, gave up his inheritance, and committed himself entirely to God. He embraced a life of poverty, prayer, and service, caring for the poor, the sick, and those society often ignored. His joy, sincerity, and devotion attracted followers who desired to live the same way.
Francis eventually founded the Franciscan Order, a community dedicated to preaching the gospel, serving the needy, and living simply. He traveled throughout Italy proclaiming Christ, often emphasizing God’s love, humility, and care for all creation. Stories about Francis frequently highlight his kindness toward animals and his delight in the natural world, which he viewed as a reflection of God’s goodness.
Though he never sought power or status, Francis became one of the most respected Christian leaders of his age. His influence spread far beyond Italy, inspiring countless believers to pursue lives marked by humility, generosity, and trust in God.
Francis died in 1226, but his example continues to resonate centuries later.
