John Flavel

John Flavel (c.1630–1691) was an English Puritan pastor, author, and theologian whose writings have encouraged Christians for generations with their warmth, wisdom, and deep confidence in God’s providence. Known for combining rich theology with practical application, Flavel helped ordinary believers see how the truths of Scripture apply to everyday life.

Born in Worcestershire, England, Flavel grew up during a period of political turmoil and religious conflict. After studying at Oxford University, he entered pastoral ministry and eventually became pastor of a congregation in the coastal town of Dartmouth. There he gained a reputation as a faithful preacher who cared deeply for the spiritual welfare of his people.

Flavel’s ministry was severely affected by the Great Ejection of 1662, when thousands of Puritan ministers were removed from their churches for refusing to conform to government-imposed religious requirements. Though expelled from his pulpit, Flavel refused to abandon his calling. He continued preaching secretly, often meeting believers in private homes, forests, and hidden locations along the English coast. His willingness to endure hardship for the sake of the gospel earned him great respect among fellow Christians.
