Thomas Goodwin
Thomas Goodwin (1600–1680) was an English Puritan pastor, theologian, and church leader whose writings continue to help Christians understand the grace, compassion, and love of Christ. Though a brilliant scholar and influential leader, Goodwin is best remembered for making profound theological truths deeply personal, helping believers find comfort in the Savior’s heart toward His people.
Born in Norfolk, England, Goodwin studied at Cambridge University and initially pursued a successful career within the Church of England. However, through careful study of Scripture and growing Puritan convictions, he became persuaded that the church required further reform. His commitment to biblical principles eventually led him to separate from the established church and embrace Congregationalism.
Goodwin ministered during one of the most turbulent periods in English history, including the English Civil War and the rise of Oliver Cromwell’s government. He became a respected leader among the Puritans and was later chosen to serve on the Westminster Assembly, where theologians gathered to discuss doctrine and church government. Although he shared many convictions with Presbyterians, Goodwin advocated for Congregational church polity.
Despite his theological influence, Goodwin’s greatest gift was his pastoral insight. He understood the struggles of believers who wrestled with guilt, doubt, and assurance. His writings repeatedly pointed Christians to the mercy and tenderness of Christ rather than merely their own failures.
His most famous work, The Heart of Christ in Heaven Toward Sinners on Earth, remains one of the most beloved devotional books in Christian history. In it, Goodwin argued that Christ’s compassion for His people did not diminish after His ascension but continues powerfully as He intercedes for them in heaven.
Throughout his life, Goodwin combined deep theological learning with warm pastoral care. He believed doctrine should strengthen faith, encourage holiness, and increase love for Christ.
